Interview: Where in UX design is copywriting and content marketing?
User experience isn't something you can deliver. It's a "must". Why? Read on!

Product Designer
Let’s start from the bottom line: what is UX design and what does a UX designer do?

UX design (user experience design) is all about making things easy and enjoyable for people when they use websites or apps. If you don’t know how to do the thing you intended with the help of an application or pressing the button leads to a different place than you expected, then it’s a poorly designed UX. A UX designer's job is to understand what users want and need, and then create designs that meet those needs. They do research, testing, and come up with ideas to improve how things work and look so that users have a great experience. Basically, UX designers make sure that using websites and apps is user-friendly and makes people happy.

Innovation, inclusiveness, the year of mobile... Isn’t User Experience in marketing and business another overrated slogan that is hype?

Nope! Nowadays, if you are creating a digital product, good user experience is not something you can deliver. It is a "must", a standard that you must ensure and constantly improve if you want to exist in the market at all. Let's say you're creating a language learning app. If it has poor UX and doesn't offer some exceptional value, there will be only a small group of users who will be able to get over it, and the rest will choose another of the many existing applications that will be more pleasant to use or offer some unique functionality. UX design helps companies differentiate themselves, build customer loyalty, and drive business growth by delivering user-centered solutions.

What does UX design give to an ordinary user of the Internet or mobile application?

Nobody likes to get annoyed by pop-ups on a page, incomprehensible commands where we don’t know which button to choose or when we can’t undo our selection, right? UX design makes things easier and better for users. It focuses on improving the usability and ease of interaction with digital products, making them more intuitive and user-friendly.

By conducting user research and testing, UX designers ensure that products align with user needs, preferences, and goals. This results in enhanced satisfaction, reduced frustration, and increased efficiency when using websites or applications. UX design also considers accessibility, making digital experiences more inclusive and accommodating for users with disabilities.

And from the client's point of view: why is UX design so important?

A well-designed website is easy to navigate, so customers can find what they're looking for quickly. It helps them accomplish their goals, like making a purchase or filling out a form, smoothly and without confusion. It can also influence customer loyalty, as users are more likely to return to a website or recommend it to others if they have a positive experience. Simply, a satisfied end user means greater revenue potential for a given company.

What do you pay attention to when designing a website? How does this process look for you?

Designing a website involves paying attention to different things. First, I think about who will be using the website and what they want. Conducting user research, creating user personas, and defining user journeys helps me empathize with users and align the design with their goals.

Then, I focus on creating an intuitive and easy-to-navigate information architecture, ensuring that the content is organized logically and presented clearly. After that I create mockups of the pages in the form of wireframes, which means I design the entire page, but without using colors or improving visual details to focus on the content and functionalities. The final phase is more about visual design, which includes choosing appropriate colors, typography, and imagery that match the brand and create a good vibe. It's also important to make sure the website works well on different devices. I constantly test and improve the design to make sure it's user-friendly and enjoyable to use.

And where in UX design is copywriting and content marketing? How important is the text layer in page design?

Copywriting and content marketing play a big role in UX design, especially when it comes to the text on a website. The words we use are important for giving users the right information and guiding them through the website. Working with copywriters and content strategists, we make sure the text is clear, engaging, and supports the overall user experience. The way we communicate and tell stories through the text helps shape how users perceive the brand and creates a cohesive experience. Just like on this screen above - this is a perfect example, our cooperation for client's website.

Hasn't everything been designed in the world of digital products? Don’t you feel that nowadays designing applications or websites is pasting existing templates?

No way! The world of digital products has indeed seen a lot of design progress, but UX designers are far from simply copying templates. While some design patterns and best practices have emerged, each product and project is unique, with its own set of user needs and challenges. UX designers constantly research and adapt existing solutions to fit specific requirements. They also innovate by exploring new ideas and technologies to create fresh experiences for users. While templates and design frameworks can serve as starting points, the ultimate goal is to create a customized and tailored experience that resonates with the target audience.

So what inspires you to continue creative work as a UX designer?

What keeps me going is the opportunity to find solutions to complex problems and create experiences that truly help users. Seeing people engage with and benefit from the designs I create is incredibly fulfilling. Working with multidisciplinary teams, such as developers, researchers, and stakeholders, also fuels my creativity, as it allows for diverse perspectives and the opportunity to learn from others. I really appreciate the fact that design is a field in which you can use very different competences, because it combines issues from different areas such as product management, psychology, marketing and visual design.
